Genesis 1:18

"To govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good."  Genesis 1:18 (NIV)

This verse is a continuation of the thought from verse 17.  This is just more reason God created the lights.  So in verse 14 and 15 God is saying how it is going to be and in verse 16 he does just what he said he was going to do.  And now in verses 17 and 18 the author is just recapping the reason for the light.

  1. So I am skimming through your blog today and I read the 1st post about how God only said the light was good and nothing about the darkness (which I had never noticed before!)...and then just reading this, another theory occurred to me: Is He saying the light is good or is He saying that the fact that He created a way to separate the light from the darkness is good? I mean, I'm sure He would say the light was good, so that could be all there is to it...but it seems like this thing about separating things into kinds is another way of teaching us that He uses in the OT...like maybe symbolically teaching us to distinguish between good and evil and deal with each accordingly. (I had a Bible teacher a while back who gave me this idea.) So anyway, just throwing that out there...don't know if it means anything but it's interesting to think about. :)

  2. That is an interesting thought. Thanks for sharing it. He could also be saying it's both. That the light is good and that the light and darkness are separated is good. Hm. This will definitely take some more thinking on.
