“Every
living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals and the
creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the
ark.” Genesis 7:23
This is an echo of Genesis 6:7 where God declared his intent after seeing how great the evil of the world had become. God said it and then he did it, but like Genesis 6:8 follows with a note that Noah found favor in God's eyes, so this verse also continues with a note that Noah and those with him were left alive.
The account of the flood has not gone into the spiritual state of Noah's wife or sons. Were they also living according to God's will? Or were they only saved because of Noah? They, at least, listened to Noah as he repeated God's instructions and built this huge boat and climbed in it themselves. Maybe they didn't hear God's voice, but trusted that Noah wouldn't lead them wrong.
Which role do we play? Are we the ones hearing God's voice in our ears? Or are we the family trusting Noah's instructions? Or are we the mobs dismissing the warnings of coming disaster out right and then perishing in the terrible floods that follow?
